What does help users feel better about the transition is that Instagram will offer users the option to hide each ad from their stream. Although many users likely follow a brand, or two, many wonder how the world will respond to ads that will take up an entire iPhone screen.

The biggest downsides I see of introducing these sponsored ads is the amount of space they will use on a feed and the process by which users require to block these ads. Instagram users love the ease of scrolling and the ease of interacting with an image with a simple double tap to ‘like.’ However, as previously stated these ads will take up an entire screen and require a user to click through in order to block the ad. Although I don’t think the ads will stop users from using Instagram, I do believe it will alter how we utilize the app. Users could potentially hit scrolling fatigue and stop trying to scroll through adds to interact with the accounts they prefer. So the questions becomes, what will happen if we users stop scrolling? Will they begin to simply worry about uploading their own pictures? Will user images be seen and interacted with? Will the ads be seen making them worth the investment of companies?

instagram-right-rail-ads-1

Like most new developments there are both positive and negatives and the roll out of Instagram ads is not different. Firstly, Instagram formalizing ads on the app will legitimize what many companies have already been doing; utilizing Instagram to present images that engage customers and tell their brand’s story. By allowing brands to sponsor their ads not only does Instagram look to make a profit off of brands using their platform but they also allow companies to ensure that the time they put into their social media marketing will be seen by a large audience. Finally I think the evolution of sponsored ads will also push companies and individuals to increase the value of their content. Through quality content that tells strong stories and resonates with Instagram users companies may able to decrease the chances of users blocking their ads.

Companies will be keeping an eye on the successes or failures of those companies that are quick to adopt this new marketing tool. Instagram will likely be prepared to make any adjustments necessary to appease both the companies paying money and their loyal users. While the companies prepare for these ads only time will tell the true impact of Instagram’s new ads of how users interact with the app and each other.

EBay to Buy PayPal’s Rival “Braintree” for $800 Million

To boost the business of electronic payment services, EBay has now declared to acquire Braintree for a sum of $800 million in cash.

EBay is the owner of PayPal which is fast becoming a successful electronic payment service all over the world. EBay believes that doing so will greatly benefit the company as it will help in expanding the mobile transactions business. EBay also briefly described the functionality of Braintree as being a global payments platform that collaborates with online/mobile-only businesses like “Airbnb” (room rental service) or “OPEN” (OpenTable Inc. which is an online restaurant-reservation company). Braintree is currently based in Chicago, USA and will soon become a part of PayPal.

PayPal being the number one fastest growing business for EBay is working towards expanding its core functionality from processing payments of online goods and services to processing payments in physical stores as well. Since the boom of smartphones and tablets in the last couple of years, consumers all around the world have started a trend to make online purchases. This has given rise to a multiple competitive companies in the payments industries such as Square Inc. or GOOG (Google Inc.). While talking about the soon-to-acquire Braintree, John Donahoe, the Chief Executive Officer for EBay, proudly stated in an interview:

“We’ve made a significant investment in mobile over the past couple of years. It’s a natural fit.”

The news has definitely impacted the financial status of EBay whose share rose by a 3.4% to $56.08 at 10:10 a.m. in US. It’s a good news to EBay since it had gained only 6.3% in the year of 2013 through yesterday as compared to a 19% increase for the “Standard & Poor’s 500 Index”.

More on Mobile

In 2002 PayPal was acquired by EBay for $1.18 billion. EBay claimed that Braintree is expected to have payments worth a $12 billion this year which will add to a gigantic sum of $20 billion that the company already expects to process in 2013. Furthermore, it has also been decided that Braintree CEO, Bill Ready, will have to report to the PayPal President, David Marcus.

Speaking on this breaking news, an RBC Capital Markets analyst, Mark Maganey, noted:

“This deal makes reasonable sense strategically as it expands PayPal’s distribution and removes a competitor. The deal is EBay’s biggest since March 2011, when it acquired GSI Commerce Inc. for $2.4 billion, a company that hosts retailers’ websites and offers marketing services to customers.”

Although the declaration of this acquisition may sound sudden, but PayPal and Braintree have actually been working together for more than a year – that is where the possibility of an acquisition arose and was sealed over the last month according to Donahoe.

EBay will not only acquire Braintree’s brand name. The company has 180 employees and owns Venmo, which is a payments startup whose technology allows for users authentication in a single application to be recognized in others. Vemno mobile app is also part of the advantageous deal for EBay.

Pinterest Announces Promoted Pins

Pinterest the online pinboard network, has announced its first type of paid advertising, to be called “promoted pins”. This is the first ad initiative of the image sharing site since it launched over three years ago. It is assumed that the company is coming under pressure to find a revenue model. It has been heavily funded by investors, who have put $338 million into the start-up, and the company is currently valued at $2.5 billion. Perhaps it is time for Pinterest to justify their valuation.

Pinterest has shown a very healthy growth period in the last few years, however there are still some users out there that don’t understand the power of the network, compared to other social networks. Some users believe it is little more than a site for people to collect pictures of things, without provoking any action. Maybe this move into monetisation will let Pinterest prove it’s worth.

The site is responsible for a huge percentage of referral clicks, ie where users are sent to the source of a product, and actually make a purchase. So much so, that the company recently tried this as a monetisation technique, secretly adding affiliate links on the website through a partner, Skimlinks. However, the affiliate links were removed after the company came under scrutiny for not being open and transparent.

Users are concerned that the new form of advertising will impede on their user experience. However Pinterest CEO, Ben Silbermann, has assured the public that they are determined to avoid using banner ads. Instead the promoted pins will be borrow from the Facebook and Twitter style of advertising where companies will be able to promote their pin in a search. It will also be very easy to differentiate promoted pins from regular user pins. Silbermann gave the example of a search for “Halloween” returning pins from a promoted costume shop such as a Darth Vader costume.

Since the launch in 2010, the site has been working to strengthen its appeal to potential advertisers. They initially added the ability to add a price banner to any pin, including the price in the description, and more recently, introduced analytics functionality to help users to track the performance of their campaigns. It is clear that their current focus is to find a sustainable revenue model.

Pinterest is only exploring the use of the promoted pins with select businesses for now, but it is expected to be rolled out more widely in the near future.

Has Apple Gone Green?

Apple is piloting a new trade-in program that lets you get credit for your old iPhone when upgrading to a new version. You will be able to walk into an Apple store with your old iPhone and walk out with a new one, with a discount, without any hassle. This is in preparation for the release of the new iPhone 5S that has been sparking speculation for months.

How Does It Work?

The trade-in has to be done in person in an Apple store. Any model iPhone can be brought in for a valuation by the Apple staff, provided it’s in working order and without any water damage. However, the trade-in is can be used for a new on-contract iPhone only. You won’t be given credit towards any other products. The good news is that it works for all models ranging from the most prehistoric iPhones to the latest iPhone 5, with the trade-in price adjusted accordingly.

Why Is Apple Doing It?

According to a spokesperson for Apple; “iPhones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous generation iPhone for reuse or recycling. In addition to helping support the environment; customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone.”

It is unclear at this stage whether the motivation is primarily driven by environmental concerns or is a pre-emptive sales ploy to encourage users to upgrade, and boost falling sales.

What’s In Store For The New iPhone 5S?

As usual, the rumour mill has been going into overdrive for the pending release of the iPhone 5S. Some websites are claiming that it will be released with a new colour range including graphite and gold. There will be the usual increases in processor power, camera quality and software. However, the most interesting, and hopeful, rumor is the replacement of the home button with a fingerprint scanner. These are all unconfirmed at this stage and will only be made certain when Apple formally releases the new model.

It’s difficult to know at this point in time whether or not the trade-in program will be beneficial to both Apple and its customers. There is always the option to privately sell an old iPhone, which will generally fetch a higher price. However, the ease and simplicity of the trade-in program is what makes it attractive. Apple’s customers have been known to pay a premium for this ease and simplicity and it is, after all, what Apple does best.

5% of your Facebook Newsfeed is now filled with ads

Have you noticed that your Facebook news feed is increasingly clogged with more ads? Earlier the ads were only available on the right-hand column, since the past year Facebook has started inserting ads in the middle of status updates and pictures shared by your friend circle. How valuable is it for the advertisers and are people already getting fatigued by them?

Facebook ad revenue was boosted to $1.6 billion, which is a 61% increase compared to the same quarter last year. Mobile ads have also increased considerably.

It’s a general consensus among social media companies and marketers that these newsfeed ads have outperformed those shown earlier in the right column. Adobe has done a detailed analysis of the 150 billion ad impressions of 50 advertisers worldwide on the Facebook platform. It found that the click-through rate or the CTR on their newsfeed ads were many times more effective than the ones on the right column on mobile devices. Comparatively, on the desktop this figure is 14 times higher than the right side ads. Thus Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is justified cleaning that there is a healthy and growing demand from the advertisers for the newsfeed ads and that demand for these advertisements continue to grow.

On the contrary, Spruce Media, a Facebook marketing company, found that though CTR rates have increased, user engagement with newsfeed ads have declined substantially. People are no longer interacting with these ads as likes, comments and shares are all down considerably. This may be because the novelty effect of the new ads are gone and people are becoming immune to these newsfeed ads.

In fact within the last year the number of ads shown by Facebook on the newsfeed has increased from 0% to 5%. But Facebook is restricting advertisers from placing too many ads inuser newsfeeds in one day, but there is a sense that people are increasingly blocking out the ads. In fact, people on desktops and mobile phones see 62 percent and 66 percent lower ads respectively than ads on the right-hand side.

However company exuecutives have expressed their confidence that newsfeed ads will continue to remain a major source of revenue for the rest of the year and is a great long-term opportunity for the company if they can improve the quality and nature of these ads.

How to run a great Hash-tag Campaign?

This post is going to tell you how to make the best use of hashtags for marketing campaigns.

A hashtag is basically this symbol(#) followed by any word or phrase or maybe even a sentence. For example #tablets would be a potential candidate for a company for running a hashtag campaign around selling tablets. Originally popular on twitter, now it is increasingly used it Instagram and Facebook as well and provide a great opportunity to run targeted campaigns around preselected hashtags.

So a company formulates a hashtag campaign around a particular keyword and hopes that it becomes viral and a lot of people share those tweets and discuss positive things around the hashtag online. It provides an amazing opportunity to foster a viral discussion among a wide variety of people and also to provide targeted discounts and giveaways.

One of the best uses of hashtag campaign and its power to change the prevailing discourse on a particular topic was demonstrated by White House when they ran a campaign with the headline “what does #$40 mean to you?”. This hashtag campaign cornered the Republicans on their payroll tax cut proposal.

However, hashtag campaigns can easily turn out to be a disaster if not well-conceived from the beginning. Many times it ends up creating the opposite reaction that the company was hoping for. The now famous #McDstories by McDonald’s started off as a well-meaning campaign ended up becoming mouthpiece for people with bad experiences with McDonald’s. Similar disasters happened with the party campaign of Susan Boyle.

The best ways to use hashtags is for posting pictures around a particular theme. You can also promote special events like “free doughnut day” by asking the users to post pictures of them having Doughnuts. It can also be a very effective tool for rallying support around a particular cause. But it’s important to be careful about the campaign and not venture into controversial topics as it can easily become a target for trolls.

Hashtags definitely lead to high user engagement and more sales conversion. Posts with hashtags are shared several times more than those without them. But it’s important to do good research on the background of the area, potential follies etc before running a campaig. Using proper grammar and online etiquette is one of the very basics of formulating a successful hashtag campaign.

So don’t rush into it and design a great hashtag campaign for your company today!

Digital assets of Singaporeans – How much are they worth?

DigitalAssets Infographic SG

SINGAPORE, May 29, 2013 – McAfee today revealed the results of their Global Digital Assets survey, and exposed that the price Singaporeans place on their digital assets could get you a private university degree in Singapore, demonstrating the value that society now places on these intangible items.

The average Singaporean now own digital items (such as photos, videos and documents) with a total financial value of S$57,500. With the latest Credit-Suisse global wealth report calculating that the average wealth of an adult Singapore is S$320,000(1), taking digital assets into account would increase household wealth by nearly 20%. And this doesn’t take into account the financial value of the digital devices themselves, with nearly a quarter (24%) of Singaporean households now owning more than five digital devices.

Four in every ten Singaporeans (41%) admit to being hugely concerned about losing their digital assets. Not surprising given that with the average Singapore worker earning S$37,705 according to the 2012 report of Department of Statistics Singapore[2], replacing these digital assets – if possible – would gobble up over one and a half year’s salary.

Singaporeans are aware of the risk of losing their digital assets, with 7 out of 10 people admitting to being familiar with the security dangers threatening their digital assets. Although Singaporeans know the dangers that they face online, with 73% concerned about identify theft, monetary theft, or fraud online, nearly the same proportion (69%) of Singaporeans admitting to not having any security software installed on any of their smartphones, and even more people (87%) admitting to not protecting their tablets.

With over half (60%) of us visiting 5-20 websites regularly that require a username and password, the importance of our password strength in protecting our digital assets is increasing. Yet, 1 out of 2 of Singaporeans use easy-to-remember passwords, or use the same passwords for all sites. That means, for 50% of us, a single leaked password would cost us over half a year’s worth of salary.

“It’s apparent that the consumer technology landscape is changing rapidly as smartphones, tablets, netbooks and Macs increase in popularity. With the number of digital devices we now use and own growing, consumers want to protect their personal digital assets, especially when you consider the considerable amount of money and time spent building up, not to mention the emotional value. Therefore consumers need an easier way to protect all their devices from online threats and from simply being destroyed,” said Steve Perchard, Vice President Consumer, McAfee Asia Pacific.

Our digital assets include many irreplaceable items that are impossible to recreate, re-download or repurchase, making up about half (47%) of our overall digital assets. Personal memories have the estimated financial value at S$18,297, while digital items containing personal records are valued slightly less at S$14,768.

The time we spend on our digital device is astoundingly high, with 58% spending 2 hours a day on our devices. Millennials spend the most time on their devices, taking up 20 hours per week, about the same time as a part time job. McAfee’s LiveSafe was specifically tailored to meet these behaviors and needs, and ensure a convenient and safe web surfing lifestyle for all.

Other interesting statistics from the Digital Assets Survey:

  • Over 95% of Singaporeans own multiple digital devices

  • 82% of Singaporeans own at least one laptop

  • 90% of Singaporeans own a smartphone

  • Men place 13.8% more on entertainment files than women do, but both place the same value on personal memories

  • 40% of us write passwords down on paper or in a notebook, or store them on our computer, phone, or tablet.

  • 29% of seniors write down their passwords on paper or in a notebook

  • Over 80% of consumers have had to reset an online password at least once within the last six months

McAfee LiveSafe key features and benefits:

  • Provides complete, unlimited device security for PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets against the latest viruses, malware, and spam along with a host of other protections.

  • An intuitive cloud-based “safety deposit box” – Personal Locker – allows users to store their most sensitive documents, including financial records, copies of IDs and passports, or anything else that is personal and private, in a convenient, ultra-safe online location. Users access their documents through biometric authentication – using voice, face and device recognition technologies

  • Simplified password management securely stores usernames and passwords, and logs in users with one click

  • Protects users’ personal information by allowing them to locate, lock and wipe devices in the event they are lost or stolen without compromising the privacy of the data

The McAfee Digital Assets 2013 study was conducted between 15 March and 9 April 2013 in US, Canada, Spain, UK, Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia, Singapore, India, Brazil & Mexico. There were 6,078 respondents.

LiveSafe Availability

Beginning in June 2013, McAfee LiveSafe service will be available through select retailers when purchased with a new PC or tablet. McAfee LiveSafe will come pre-installed on Ultrabook™ devices and PCs from Dell in Singapore starting on June 9, 2013.
